One of the biggest challenges that students face is staying on task and completing the entire essay outline before the semester ends. Students get so caught up in beginning the writing process that they often overlook the importance of an essay outline. So before the first term of the semester arrives, it’s important to take the time to write an essay outline.

You can think of an informative essay outline as your springboard to a more complex writing process. In college, you’ll likely take many different courses and be forced to read and learn about a wide range of topics in many different order. Each type of reading and listening requires a different type of writing style.

When writing in the traditional outline format, you simply list your main points and use go sub-lists to support your main point. For example, in discussing Shakespeare, you might quote some of his works or quote passages from The Merchant of Venice or Aesop. Then you would write your conclusion stating which of the sub-lists is your preferred choice for this topic. You could also use a traditional outline format to discuss the structure of the essay. This can include different sections such as introduction, body and conclusion.

When it comes to writing in the informal style, you generally start with a statement that summarizes your topic. Next you choose a topic sentence or paragraph then write your main points, keep paragraphs short and to the point. If you use the traditional essay outline format you would first write a title statement, a thesis statement, a body statement, and a conclusion statement. As mentioned above, there are three types of essay outlines – traditional, conversational and experimental. Traditional outlines are basically what you learned in school or college, they usually consist of three main parts, an introduction, body and a conclusion. A conversational outline is very similar to the traditional outline, except you use a different format. In a conversational outline you usually start with an interesting idea and then explore the various possible ways to express your idea using various forms such as metaphors, similes, images and allegory.

Last but not least, the last type of essay outline I want to talk about is the experimental format. In this format you have to be very innovative in how you organize your ideas, and how you express them. I don’t recommend going this route unless you are extremely creative but if you think you have what it takes to organize your ideas into a meaningful essay then this is the perfect like this way to organize your thoughts before writing the actual paper. Please take note that in order to make an effective experiment you need to be very creative!
